Cosplaying Kuroyukihime with 8-feet high wings that are extremely steady, it's probably my most 'wow' factor cosplay to date.
As I was first exposed to Kawahara Reiki's work of Accel World, I started reading the novels from BakaTsuki and immediately got hooked, even more so when the anime came out. It was a project not many cosplayers dared to take up because of the wings being very difficult to make, but I just loved her too much to not to cosplay. Though, thanks to this, I was also hooked on Sword Art Online, haha.
For the ensemble, I ordered the dress from Taobao, but a lot of modifications had to be made as I wasn't as flat as her. My mother and I had to cover me up as much as possible as my dad wasn't too happy at how bare the costume was. The first pair of wings we made with the help of an artist friend was based on the nendoroid, as it was our first time making wings. It was a tiny but adorable pair still, and when I wore it to AFAMY'12, people were fascinated by my wings and I earned the nickname Butterfly Girl. I gathered quite the crowd, and it was very difficult to move from the ends of the hall as I was constantly being stopped for pictures. The stage staff/crew spotted me and wanted me to take her up to their cosplay stage the day after, but I already made a promise with my cosplay partner. So yes, I threw away the chance to 'show-off' for the sake of my promise with my friend. I'm one who keeps my word, after all.
The wings were made out of metal wires and fabric, thus, why it was super durable. The veins of the wings were sewed on, for a more defined line which can be seen in pictures clearly. The second pair of wings were made in the same way, only that it was based on the figma, scaled to my size. The time I redebut her at Comic Fiesta 2012, I was constantly being warned by the felynes to not cause a traffic congestion. Even before I was ready for photos, people kept taking pictures of me. So, if you do see a picture of a sitting butterfly floating around (pun intended), that'd me.
I didn't take her out until Comic Fiesta 2014, as I felt that she deserved more time in the spotlight as in 2012, I was mostly at the stage area, and was very ill (I had high fever for both days, and having super heavy wings was a bit much on my health). I remade her antennas (with fishing string) and the top of the costume to cover up more of my stuffs. This time, I even had her silver blades, something different than from the time I had the umbrella and Haruyuki in 2012. It was pretty nice to have a sort of VIP treatment from the felynes as whenever they saw me approaching, they chanted, "Giant butterfly coming through, make way, make way!".
I finally got to have a proper photoshoot for Kuroyukihime 3 years later, but it was rushed as it started drizzling not long after we arrived at the location. I still kind of want to have a longer photoshoot as I believe we could have done more, but perhaps in the future when I don't have anything else in queue for a shoot.
All in all, this is definitely one of my favourite characters to cosplay as. A character with elegance, grace, and regality.
